AFSCME District 1199C

District 1199C of the National Union of Hospital and healthcare Employees represents nearly 13,000 workers in the Philadelphia region. The union hired A. Waxman & Company to assist with media relations and communications strategy.

The torch has been passed to younger leadership in one of Philadelphia’s
most-influential unions, National Union of Hospital & Health Care Employees Local 1199C.

A. Waxman & Company publicized the change in leadership at District 1199C through a media strategy that produced positive coverage for
numerous members of the union’s executive board.

A. Waxman & Company worked with District 1199C to produce a memo exposing unsafe working conditions at the Philadelphia Tribune. The memo generated widespread media coverage after being released and resulted in multiple changes to protect workers in the newsroom.

PLACEMENTS:

A. Waxman & Company organized a press conference outside of Temple
Health demanding hazard pay for all District 1199C members who have
worked through COVID-19. The media campaign was a critical component of the successful campaign to pressure Temple Health to fairly compensate workers.

PLACEMENTS:

District 1199C’s collective bargaining team to generate news coverage of a strike vote taken by workers at Saint Monica’s in South Philadelphia. The end result was a contract with big
raises and hazard pay for District 1199C members.

A. Waxman & Company worked with District 1199C to publicize the results of a union organizing campaign at Delaware Valley Residential Care. We trained spokespeople, facilitated interviews, and generated social media graphics. The publicity resulted in multiple leads for the organizing department.

everyone that Hahnemann is required to respect District 1199C’s
contract over the coming weeks, even if the worst-case scenario
occurs and the facility closes permanently.”

District 1199C faced a crisis when the corporate owners of Hahnemann abruptly announced that they would be closing the facility. A. Waxman & Company managed the media firestorm and ensured that the members saw how hard District 1199C’s leadership was fighting for workers who lost their jobs.
